We Try.

The idea for We Try came to Si in a lucid dream, early one autumn morning. The bass and melody, fully formed, Si recorded the rough melodies into his phone, capturing the idea in its infancy. This was the key to writing the song. The initial studio demo the pair worked on felt clunky, unfinished, and miles away from what had been downloaded from the airwaves early that morning.

A few years later, the song developed during studio sessions at Liam’s North London flat. We listened to classic dance records, leaning into our love of early ’90s Chicago house, borrowing from those tight, DX7-sounding basslines. The result gave the track a drive and purpose in the main verses and chorus, giving the track a rhythmic hook. Playing live and rehearsing, the song fully gained a life of its own. It became more ethereal and emotional, while still keeping that stomping rhythm. The process of writing We Try took many forms, from initial ideas to studio sessions and finally playing it live to refine what we made.

The initial idea for Resonator was written around the time the war broke out in the East after Covid. A sense of anger and frustration emerged from these world events, and the track was written with those feelings in mind. Liam wrote the punchy drums for the track first, taking influences from early 1990s techno, mixing analogue drums with distorted sampling. The bass came next, a simple, spacious pattern recorded from the Moog, with a touch of acid 303 filtering. The chords were written next, hoping to give some relief to the dark soundscape.

Once the track was arranged, Liam sent it to Si to bring in vocal ideas and feedback on the overall arrangement. Si listened over a few weeks to allow the ideas to stir up his emotions, and he found himself testing words with venom pertaining to the troubles seen in the war. We decided to bring the track into our live performance when we played before Goldie in Leeds. Two weeks before its live debut, we decided to add layers of live guitar to give the intro more texture, enhancing the tension and humanity to the song.

A song written as pure inspiration, the baseline came to Si straight from the ether whilst driving, humming tones into a dictaphone to get the idea recorded. The chords were pieced together over the coming days on the piano, adding a loose melody through the airwaves. The inspiration for the lyrics came whilst watching a talk on simulation theory, giving the lyrics the open-ended questions of life and death.

The song was fully formed when Liam started the production and mixing, adding a more rhythmic bass, overdriven percussion, and a satellite mimicking arpeggiator to add a sense of space. Bringing the song together and aligning with the sound we designed on previous records.

“Our debut EP marks the first music released by the band Midnite Pharmacy. The lead track, ‘Becoming’, defines our sound and direction, merging electronic and indie styles. For our first release, we wanted to showcase the core structure and depth of our sound."

Becoming

Title track, Becoming, is a raw and introspective piece that explores grief, addiction, and the process of finding light amidst darkness. Originally conceived during lockdown as a piano-driven arrangement, the track evolved into a darker, more dissonant composition. The duo combined raw, organic drum patterns with a Moog bassline, layered guitar riffs, and a driving arpeggiator to create a powerful sonic journey. With emotionally charged lyrics that speak to inner struggles and self-realisation, Becoming showcases the duo’s ability to balance vulnerability and dance-floor energy.

Higher Being

Written during a period of personal change, Higher Being is an uplifting yet melancholic track that blends shoegaze-inspired indie guitars with house beats and emotional hooks. Drawing on unreciprocated feelings from a failed romance, the lyrics weave a bittersweet narrative, highlighted by a dark sense of humour. The song’s evolution was shaped by live performances, with added rhythm guitar giving it an authentic edge.

Transcendance

Inspired by the euphoria of 90s underground house and techno, Transcendance is a celebration of rave culture. Built around a euphoric chord progression, the track features dynamic vocal melodies and harmonies layered over stripped-back instrumentation, leaving space for the duo’s collaborative vision to shine. The lyrics evoke the cathartic joy of losing yourself in music, capturing the abandonment of real-world stress and the freedom found on the dance floor. With its uplifting energy, Transcendance encapsulates the ethos of electronic music as a source of escapism and connection.
